These Are The Most Stolen Vehicles In The U.S.

The Highway Loss Data Institute has combed through all the data and found that in the U.S., the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is stolen far more frequently than any other make or model.

  • To figure out which vehicles are most commonly swiped, they analyzed stolen vehicle data for 2022 to 2024 car models.
  • Relative to the number of these Camaros on the road, they have a theft rate 39 times higher than the average for all vehicles from those model years.
  • The ZL1 is a high performance version of the Chevy Camaro, which is also pretty popular with thieves with a theft rate 13 times higher than the average for the 2022-2024 model years.
  • General Motors released a software update for 2020 to 2024 Camaro models earlier this year in an effort to improve security.
  • According to the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), muscle cars are especially attractive to thieves as they’re looking for high horsepower vehicles.

"What all vehicles in the top 20 have in common is that they are relatively expensive, relatively powerful and in many cases they are pickup trucks," explains Matt Moore, chief insurance operations officer at HLDI. He says the Camaro ZL1 is “very desirable to thieves,” and they have a “vulnerability that makes them relatively easy to steal,” but he doesn’t want to describe the process and encourage thieves.
