In Japan, a new service lets people pay about $23 per hour to “rent” a grandma. These hired elders offer things like advice, childcare, cooking lessons, or simply being a caring listener. The idea began around worries that modern life leaves people feeling alone and missing the gentle support grandparents often provide. Background-checked “rented grandmas” come from local groups and usually visit homes, though they can also go out, like to parks or stores.
Clients include busy parents, students homesick for childhood, or anyone just craving a warm chat or homemade treat. Users say the service gives real comfort and connection in a polite, non-intrusive way. Providers see it as good work and a way to use their experience. And most importantly, it’s all platonic. No hugging boundaries are set, but no romantic ties are part of the deal.
